AVID stands for "Advancement Via Individual Determination."
The AVID concept was developed in California by Mary Catherine Swanson in the early 1980's. Purpose of AVID at PaschalAVID at Paschal is considered both a 9-12 college-prep elective class and a school wide set of research-based instructional practices to improve success for all students. AVID students are capable of completing college-prep curriculum and have a strong desire to attend college. The AVID curriculum is designed to help students fulfill their potential; academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities help keep each student on track.
Students apply to be interviewed for the program and, if selected, choose AVID for one of their elective classes each year. AVID students conduct socratic tutorials twice a week, engage in rigorous AVID curriculum (includes: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading)WICOR, and participate in both college visits and team building. AVID ClubAVID Club that all AVID students/non-students are encouraged to join. The club carries a nominal fee of $3.00 per student member. Meetings will be held once/month; the club sponsor is Jason Lovell.
